Sixteen-year-old Tendo Byarugaba of Kampala Academy Swimming Club set a new East Africa 200m freestyle record at the Uganda Open Swimming Championships held at the Lugogo Indoor Arena on Sunday, clocking 1:52.34 and shaving 0.8 seconds off the previous record set in 2019.
National swimming coach Ruth Nakato described Byarugaba as "the most naturally gifted swimmer I have coached in 20 years" and confirmed plans to prepare him for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics qualifying campaign.
