A catastrophic landslide struck the villages of Nalweyo, Buwali and Namasa in Bududa District at approximately 2:30am, burying an estimated 200 households under metres of mud and rock.

Office of the Prime Minister spokesperson Deus Byamugisha confirmed at least 60 deaths with over 300 people still unaccounted for. UPDF soldiers and Uganda Red Cross volunteers are working through the debris with hand tools and sniffer dogs.

"The scale of destruction is unprecedented," said Bududa District Chairman Steven Mubiru. "We need heavy machinery and more rescue personnel urgently."

The Minister for Disaster Preparedness, Hilary Onek, is travelling to the scene. President Museveni has directed UNRA to clear access roads to facilitate rescue operations.
