The Uganda Cranes wrote a new chapter in East African football history on Tuesday night with a stunning 2-1 victory over three-time champions Nigeria at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, securing qualification for the AFCON quarterfinals for only the second time since 1978.
Fahad Bayo opened the scoring in the 34th minute with a thunderous left-foot strike. Nigeria equalised through Victor Osimhen in the 67th minute, but substitute Denis Omedi drove home the winner in the 88th minute, sending 42,000 fans into ecstasy.
"This team believed when nobody else did," said head coach Micho Salim. "We are not finished."
Kampala erupted in celebrations with motorists honking horns through the night on Jinja Road and Entebbe Road.
