TikTok has become the fastest route to continental discovery for Ugandan music, with Azawi, Spice Diana, Winnie Nwagi and newcomer Fingerprint each amassing over 1 million followers on the platform — up from virtually zero in 2022.
We spoke with digital marketing strategist Christine Akullo about the five tactics consistently working for Ugandan artists: (1) releasing 15-second dance-challenge hooks before full tracks, (2) posting studio process clips that show personality not polish, (3) engaging with fan duets within 48 hours, (4) using viral Luganda phrases as captions, and (5) releasing tracks on Friday at 8am Lagos time (which is also East African prime time). "The algorithm doesn't know geography," Akullo said. "It knows engagement."
