A devastating head-on collision between a Pioneer Easy Bus and a petrol tanker occurred at the Kigumba junction on the Gulu-Kampala highway at 11:45pm on Sunday, killing 38 passengers instantly and critically injuring 62 others.
Gulu University Teaching Hospital declared a mass casualty incident and called in all off-duty medical staff. "Our theatres have been running non-stop since midnight," said Medical Superintendent Dr Okello Sam. "We urgently need blood donations — O-positive and A-positive."
Uganda Police Flying Squad and UPDF soldiers from Gulu Barracks are managing the scene. The tanker did not ignite, preventing an even greater catastrophe.
