The Ministry of Agriculture has declared an emergency response after fall armyworm infestations have destroyed an estimated 60% of maize and sorghum crops in Mbale, Bududa, Jinja, Soroti and Kamuli districts.
"We are looking at potential famine conditions affecting over 800,000 people in the affected sub-counties," said Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze. "The government is distributing pesticides and mobilising NAADS extension workers."
The Uganda National Farmers' Federation estimates crop losses at UGX 45 billion. The World Food Programme has offered to pre-position emergency food supplies.
Farmers are advised to check their fields daily and report sightings to the district agricultural officer. Tutorial guides are available on the Ministry's toll-free line: 0800-100-100.
